Matt started his high school athletic career by going out for Wrestling as a ninth grader and lettered. That spring he went out for Track & Field and lettered. The following fall he went out for Football and lettered.  After his experience in Spring Track Matt decided to continue his Track career and go out for Indoor Track and lettered.  The following fall he decided to continue with his Track and try Cross Country and lettered.  In 1997, at the Indoor Meet of Champions, Matt ran the 880yd. leg on the Distance Medley Relay which set a Indoor school record 10:28.18; which stands today.  At the Indoor State meet Matt placed 4th the 800 meters and was a part of the 4X800m which placed second.  Matt was 2nd team All State for the 4X800m relay and Honorable Mention for the 800 meters.  Outdoors Matt was 1st team All League in 4X800m and 4X400m; placing 1st at the District 1 Championships in the 4X800m and 3rd in the 800 meters.  At the 1997 PIAA State Track Championships the 4X800m team placed 2nd and Matt placed 4th in the 800 meters.  Matt was 2ndteam All State 1997.  The 1997/98 Indoor State Track meet Matt placed 1st in the 800 meters in a new State record and the current school record and at the time the number one time in the Nation; he also anchored the 4X800m team to a 1st place and state record.  He was named male Athlete of the 1998 Indoor State Meet.  Matt was named 1st team All State in the 4X800 and the 800 meters and was the 1998 NPHS Indoor Track MVP. The 1998 Spring Track season Matt won the 400 meters and 800 meters at the Suburban One League Championships.  He was All League in four events; 400 meters, 800 meters, 4X800m, 4X400m. He won the District One 800 meters and anchored the 4X800m.  At the 1998 PIAA State Track meet Matt won the State 800 meters and anchored the 4X800m to first place.  He was named 1st team All State in the 800 meters and 4X800m Relay and was named NPHS Spring Track MVP.  Matt attended the University of Virginia on a Track Scholarship.  He lettered 4 years while at UVA and was All ACC indoor and Outdoor in the 800 meters and Team Captain in 2002.
